Flatiron Steel manufactures Core Ten and Cold Roll
"weathering steel". Core Ten is a high-strength, 22
gauge cold rolled steel of architectural interest produced
from up to 30% recycled materials. After installation
and exposure to normal weather the surface, in place,
develops a pleasing iron oxide matte finish, which accents
the appearance of any building on which it is used.
The weathering process that occurs after installation
eventually decreases and from that point on the finish
acts as a protective coating for the base metal. Core
Ten never completely stops rusting. The fact that Core
Ten will develop an oxide on its surface that essentially
stops corrosion has been explained by laboratory analysis
of the rust film. It was found that the alloying elements
in the steel, particularly copper, chromium and nickel
produced insoluble compounds that clogged the pores
at the rust/steel interface, thereby ending the regeneration
process.
Core Ten, in the clean environment of the intermountain
west, can last two to three times as long as composition
or wood shingles, up to eighty (80) years. Cold Roll
steel, identical in appearance and weathering characteristics
to Core Ten, does not contain the alloying elements
of Core Ten, giving Cold Roll steel roofing a lifespan
of up to fifty (50) years.
Both Core Ten and Cold Roll are top choices for architectural
interest and can be used as:
- Your total roofing material
- An accent roof in conjunction with other elements
of design
- An interior design focal point or backdrop, such
as a textured ceiling, backsplash in the kitchen or
bath, or wall treatment
Produced in a 7/8" corrugated wave pattern with 34
5/8" roof panel width coverage or 37 3/8" wall coverage,
these materials represent a textural design element
lending a rustic western weathered look to your building
or interior project.
Core Ten or Cold Roll-your first choice in
weathered roofing. Teton Steel offers both of these
products manufactured to your specifications in just
1 to 3 days.
